TORONTO, July 13, 2022 — The Ryerson Image Centre, established in 2012, announced today that it has changed its name to The Image Centre. As a dynamic centre for photo-historical research, collecting, and exhibitions, The Image Centre has adopted its new name on the occasion of the institution’s ten-year anniversary.

The fund was initiated with a generous gift to institute an annual Award that supports the production of high quality student exhibitions in the RIC Student Gallery.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) offers annual fellowships to support research related to our collections, bringing scholars from around the world to the RIC’s Peter Higdon Research Centre to study specific areas of the RIC’s photography collections first-hand. Research by RIC fellows has been extensively published in books and academic journals and included in panels and conferences on photography, furthering discourse around the medium, its history and practices on an international level. Indian-born, Canadian Artist Sunil Gupta Receives Career-Spanning Retrospective at the RIC

This spring, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) will mount an extensive retrospective by acclaimed photographer Sunil Gupta, whose autobiographical narratives capture his experiences as a gay man of colour living with HIV in Canada, the U.S, England and his birthplace, India. Sharing works from the 1970s to 2010s, From Here to Eternity: Sunil Gupta, A Retrospective invites viewers to think critically about the relationship between identity, representation, bodies, and freedoms. The exhibition runs from April 6–August 6, 2022 in the Main Gallery.
