The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) marks its 2014 winter season with four exhibitions that focus on national, social and technological histories.

Through the use of documentary photography and film, each exhibition examines a transforming cultural landscape.

The public opening reception will take place on January 22, 2014, 6 – 8 p.m.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) celebrates its second fall season in Toronto with a line-up of dynamic exhibitions and events.

On view until December 15, Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art. explores the act of resistance in contemporary indigenous art through the work of aboriginal artists and photographs from the Black Star Collection.

Opening November 6, 2013, Elena Malkova: Camera Obscura presents two video works, which reconsider the history of the camera obscura.

Mohamed Lachemi, provost and vice president academic at Ryerson University, is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Roth as the new director of the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC).

The appointment is for a five-year term beginning autumn 2013.

Paul Roth brings to the Ryerson Image Centre more than 25 years experience with some of the most important photography collections in North America.

Most recently, he was senior curator and director of photography and media arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where he served two tenures in different capacities over 16 years.

He has held positions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and at the Center for Creative Photography in Arizona.

Roth also served as executive director of The Richard Avedon Foundation in New York, where he led one of the most successful single-artist photography auctions in history.

Doina Popescu, Founding Director of the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC), has announced that she will be leaving her position as Director in autumn of 2013.

Ms. Popescu will become a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Ryerson University, working on special projects with the Provost and Vice President Academic, the Ryerson Image Centre’s new director, and the extensive community that the RIC has developed over the past five years.

Gabor Szilasi: The Eloquence of the Everyday combines portraits, domestic and commercial interiors, cityscapes, and images of rural life.

It also includes environmental portraiture, a genre of photography in which the setting— a person’s home, workplace, or even a public place—plays an essential role in describing the subject.

The exhibition is organized into three geographically-based themes: Hungary, Rural Quebec and Montreal.

The exhibition includes early images of Hungary in the 1950s, as well as those made since 1980.

The photographs of rural Quebec date principally from the 1970s, while those of Montreal span the years from the late 1950s to the present.

Within each section, architectural, town and city views mingle with portraits to reveal Szilasi’s belief in the centrality of community.

Ghost Dance: Activism. Resistance. Art. combines commissioned works, existing works and photographs from the Black Star Collection to examine the role of the artist as activist, as chronicler and as provocateur in the ongoing struggle for Indigenous rights, self determination and sovereignty.

The exhibition, curated by Steven Loft, will be on view September 18 - December 15, 2013 in the Ryerson Image Centre’s Main Gallery, University Gallery, and on the Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall.

Artists include Sonny Assu, Vernon Ah Kee, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Dana Claxton, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, Alan Michelson, Theo Sims, Skawennati, and Jackson 2bears.

The Ryerson Image Centre and the School of Image Arts are pleased to present Chilean-born New York-based artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar in a Kodak Lecture entitled It is Difficult, in which he will discuss his most recent projects around the world.

The Kodak Lecture will take place on Thursday, February 28, 2013, 7:00 p.m., at Ryerson University, 350 Victoria Street, LIB-72.

The Kodak Lecture: Alfredo Jaar It is Difficult complements the exhibition Alfredo Jaar: The Politics of Images curated by Dr. Gaelle Morel, currently on view at the Ryerson Image Centre.

Exhibition Human Rights Human Wrongs, Alfredo Jaar's multi-media exhibition The Politics of Images, Dominic Nahr's Captive State, and Clive Holden's UNAMERICAN UNFAMOUS are among the exhibitions and events centering around human rights and inclusion taking place at the Ryerson Image Centre during Black History Month 2013.
