The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is pleased to announce its new website www.ryersonimagecentre.ca, launched in conjunction with the institution’s fifth anniversary.

The RIC celebrated the milestone earlier this fall as part of Nuit Blanche Toronto, five years to the day since the museum’s opening in Fall 2012.

The new website, with its minimal, streamlined interface, highlights the RIC’s three areas of focus: exhibitions, collections, and research.

While the public is likely most familiar with the RIC’s exhibition program, visitors will now have the chance to explore all areas of activity in greater depth.

To celebrate the Ryerson Image Centre's fifth anniversary, the RIC will be participating in Nuit Blanche Toronto–5 years to the day since opening in Fall 2012.

On September 30, from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, the RIC teams up with the Magenta Foundation to present an event featuring past and current winners of the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers Competition.

Following this special program, the gallery’s exhibitions remain open until sunrise, including The Faraway Nearby: Photographs of Canada from The New York Times Photo Archive.  

This fall, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) will explore a century of Canada’s history through photographs from The New York Times Photo Archive.

Titled The Faraway Nearby, the exhibition examines how the country has been understood and discussed in relation to its closest geographical, political, and cultural neighbour.

To mark Canada 150, the exhibition will kick off with a party, open to the public, on Wednesday, September 13, 6:00–8:00 pm. It will remain on view until December 10, 2017. 

Ryerson Image Centre, Noon Time Collection Talk Series

The Ryerson Image Centre invites current Ryerson University students or recent alumni (graduated within five years) to submit proposals to present a lecture as part of the RIC’s Noon Time Collection Talk series.

Located in the RIC’s research centre, these 40-minute talks are an opportunity for the public to view and learn about objects from the RIC’s vast collection of photographs and related ephemera.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is excited to host the public launch party of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival on April 28, 2017, 7:00–11:00 pm.

In addition to acting as a hub for CONTACT, the RIC will present the following exhibitions and installations, on view April 29 – August 13, 2017:

In honour of Canada 150, the Ryerson Image Centre’s glass façade will feature a new mural of key figures who helped establish the country’s national identity through their endeavours, diversity and resilience.

This historical panorama will include 14 portraits: Margaret Atwood, John Candy, Leonard Cohen, Viola Desmond, Chief Dan George, Wayne Gretzky, Yousuf Karsh, k.d. lang, Marshall McLuhan, Oscar Peterson, Mary Pickford, Buffy Sainte-Marie, David Suzuki, and Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

In conjunction with Canada’s sesquicentennial celebration, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is pleased to announce a promised gift of nearly 25,000 press photographs of Canadian news events and personalities from the 20th century, drawn from The New York Times Photo Archive.

These extraordinary Canadian images have been promised to the RIC by Toronto-area real estate entrepreneur Chris Bratty as a generous act of cultural repatriation.

Bratty purchased the images from The New York Times in 2008.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) will kick off the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival with the official launch party, open to the public, on April 28, 2017, 7:00– 11:00 pm.

In addition to acting as a host institution for CONTACT, the RIC is proud to present the Scotiabank Photography Award exhibition, which this year features the work of Suzy Lake, 2016 winner of the prestigious award.

Alongside this show, the RIC will showcase two more CONTACT primary exhibitions, including a robotic installation by artist Max Dean and a four-part film series by First Nations and Metis artists Kent Monkman, Caroline Monnet, Jeff Barnaby, and Michelle Latimer.

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is pleased to present photographer Dawoud Bey, as part of the bi-annual Tanenbaum Lecture Series.

Bey is best known for his innovative portraiture practice, which challenges preconceptions about both the genre and the documentary nature of photography.

The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the Rogers Communications Centre, Ryerson University (80 Gould Street, room RCC- 204).

The Tanenbaum Lecture Series is presented by the RIC in partnership with Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts.

This Black History Month, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) and Black Artist’s Network Dialogue (BAND) team up to present No Justice, No Peace: From Ferguson to Toronto positioning photography at the forefront during an era of heightened global protests against systemic violence by police.

No Justice, No Peace is part of Power to the People: Photography and Video of Repression and Black Protest, a season of exhibitions exploring the historical and ongoing struggles for justice between people of colour and police forces representing the state.

Exhibition partner: Gladstone Hotel. Power to the People is generously supported by media sponsors Toronto Star and CBC Toronto.

This winter, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) and Black Artist’s Network Dialogue (BAND) team up to present a season of shows titled Power to the People: Photography and Video of Repression and Black Protest.

These exhibitions explore the historical and ongoing struggle for justice between people of colour and police forces representing the state.

On view from January 18 to April 9, 2017, the RIC presents Attica USA 1971: Images and Sounds of a Rebellion; Birmingham, Alabama, 1963: Dawoud Bey/Black Star; Adam Pendleton: My Education, A Portrait of David Hilliard; and From the Collection: Sister(s) in the Struggle.

The season launches with a reception on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Following this, from February 2 to 26, BAND presents No Justice, No Peace: From Ferguson to Toronto at the Gladstone Hotel.
