Kids talk climate change with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Kids age 9-12 from Toronto reached out to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with questions about one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.

The Prime Minister is set to answer via a series of video responses on Twitter beginning Friday, November 25 through Sunday, November 27, 2016.

His participation marks the latest iteration of Climate Talks, a documentary project created by Toronto-based art collective Madeleine Co. and commissioned by the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) in conjunction with the RIC exhibition The Edge of the Earth: Climate Change in Photography and Video.

The public can also join in the talks with @RICgallery using the hashtag #climatetalks.

The Ryerson Image Centre partners with the MIT Press on a new series of books

This fall, the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) launches a new series of books co-published with the MIT Press.

RIC Books presents inquiry into the histories, practices and impact of photography.

The first volume, The “Public” Life of Photographs, includes essays that explore how photographs are encountered in the world, and how the context of their viewing influences reception and meaning.

The Ryerson Image Centre explores climate change in photography and video

The Ryerson Image Centre explores one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.

Opening Wednesday, September 14, with a party from 6 pm to 8 pm, The Edge of the Earth: Climate Change in Photography and Video presents recent and historic work by a range of pioneering and visionary artists from around the world.

Also launching in conjunction with the exhibition, Climate Talks is an 8-episode video series featuring discussions between children and adults about their hopes, fears and failings as they confront a future impacted by climate change.

Denise Birkhofer appointed Collections Curator at the Ryerson Image Centre

The Ryerson Image Centre is pleased to welcome Denise Birkhofer to the role of Collections Curator and Research Centre Manager, beginning autumn 2016.

In this position, Birkhofer will oversee the collections and archives; curate, publish and add to the holdings; serve the Ryerson community and visiting scholars; and lead a team of staff dedicated to collections management.

Increasingly and forebodingly, artists are turning their attention to the subject of climate change, in poignant and often confrontational ways.

Opening September 14, 2016, this exhibition presents recent and historic work by a range of pioneering and visionary artists from around the world.

Climate Talks: Kids have questions about climate change. Will you answer?

Climate Talks invites children and adults to talk to each other about one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.

Created by the Toronto-based art collective Madeleine Co. and commissioned by the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) and in conjunction with the upcoming RIC exhibition The Edge of the Earth: Climate Change in Photography and Video, this 8-episode video series features discussions between children and adults about their hopes, fears and failings as they confront a future impacted by climate change.

The public will be invited to participate in the talks @ricgallery using the hashtag #climatetalks and #kidsask

In memory of artist Elaine Ling

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) regrets to announce that Toronto-based physician and artist Elaine Ling passed away on Monday, August 1.

In 2002, Ryerson University acquired a selection of Ling’s photographs, marking the beginning of a lasting relationship between the artist and what would later become the RIC, now home to a body of work spanning her career.

Thanks to an endowment by the artist, the RIC also awards the Elaine Ling Research Fellowship annually to a masters-level student in pursuit of scholarship related to photography.

In memory of Wendy Snyder MacNeil, pioneering photographer and filmmaker

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) regrets to announce the passing of pioneering photographer and filmmaker Wendy Snyder MacNeil, who died at her home in Lincoln, Massachusetts on the afternoon of July 20, with her immediate family at her side.

In 2007, the RIC became the custodian of MacNeil's archive, a donation the institution celebrated earlier this year with the exhibition and catalogue, The Light Inside: Wendy Snyder MacNeil, Photographs and Films.

Ryerson Image Centre celebrates 20 years of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival with an exhibition of work by Angela Grauerholz, 2015 winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award.

Alongside this is Annie MacDonell: Holding Still // Holding Together, a new commission by this Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist.

Both exhibitions open on May 4, 2016, with a reception from 6 pm to 8 pm, and will be on view throughout the summer until August 21, 2016.

Susan Meiselas - Kurdistan In the Shadow of History: Gathering Photographs from the Front Lines

The Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is pleased to present renowned photographer Susan Meiselas, as part of the Tanenbum Lecture Series in partnership with the International Issues Discussions Series.

Meiselas will discuss Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History, her influential visual history of the Kurdish people, assembled from photographs, documents and accounts surviving centuries of war and loss.

The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00 pm at the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre (245 Church Street, ENG-103).
