Artist Talk and Film Screening with Zinnia Naqvi

Join Zinnia Naqvi for an artist talk and screening of her experimental film, Seaview. Combining home video and recent footage along with text, conversations, and testimonials, Seaview reveals the complications of translating culture across time and seas. Naqvi confronts her personal struggle between the ideals of Western and Eastern societies, ultimately confounding any single understanding of Pakistani society.

Noon Time Collection Talk with Chantal Wilson

Join The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) Registrar Chantal Wilson for a discussion of the work of Charles Moore and its dissemination to the public through the popular illustrated press.

As a photographer for Black Star photo agency between 1958 and 1965, Moore amassed a significant body of documentary photography depicting some of the most critical conflicts of the American Civil Rights Movement. His work during this period begins and ends in Montgomery, Alabama: the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s arrest at a courthouse in 1958, and the destination of several thousand civil rights marchers during the legendary Selma-to-Montgomery march in 1965.

Tanenbaum Lecture with Rebecca Belmore

Join artist Rebecca Belmore for a lecture on her recent work.

Belmore (Anishinaabe) is a member of the Lac Seul First Nation, currently living and working in Montreal. Through a variety of media, including performance, sculpture, video and installation, she confronts Canada's continued colonial impact on First Nations peoples and through her practice subverts both historical and contemporary power structures to release and empower her community through art.

Her work will appear alongside six other contemporary artists in Anti-Glamour: Portraits of Women, on view at The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) from January 21 to April 5, 2015.

This event is free and open to the public. Please arrive early to ensure seating.

Morel is the curator of both Burn with Desire: Photography and Glamour and Anti-Glamour: Portraits of Women, on view at The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) until April 5, 2015. The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) Symposium - Photography Historians: A New Generation?

The fourth annual The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) symposium on photography, this year entitled “Photography Historians: A New Generation?” highlights the most current research in the history of photography, bringing emerging scholars from universities worldwide to speak about their bodies of inquiry, their methods and their findings. This rising group of young photo-historians will engage in dialogue with renowned scholars, revealing how contemporary historical inquiry sits within—and departs from—established traditions. The hope is that participants, and the audience, may better understand how we came to surpass notions of the “history of photography,” moving beyond even diverse “histories of photography,” to arrive at our present sense that there are many histories of photographs.

The conference will take place over two and a half days and will be divided into fours sections to highlight thematic similarities and shared concerns: “The Role of Photographic Reproductions,” “The Business of Photography,” “The Construction of Photographic Meanings” and “Art Photography in the Making."

Registration: Admission to the event is free. Seating is limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The symposium is organized by The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre), with generous support from Toronto Metropolitan University's (formerly Ryerson University) School of Image Arts.

Spring/Summer 2015

Noon Time Collection Talk with Michael Mitchell

Join photographer and writer Michael Mitchell for a discussion on the themes present in Elaine Ling’s work, as well as her photographic practice.

In 2014, The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) received an acquisition of thirty-six photographs by Canadian photographer Elaine Ling. These new holdings supplement the existing collection of works by Ling donated in 2002, which as a group represent a significant body of photographs examining constructed environments. Seeking the solitude of deserts and abandoned structures left by ancient cultures, Ling has explored the shifting equilibrium between the natural and the man-made in her photography.

Mark Ruwedel (b. 1954, American, Canadian citizen) has become one of Canada’s most respected landscape photographers during a career spanning three decades. Working primarily in the western territories of the United States and Canada, Ruwedel documents traces and imprints of human activity on the earth. He describes the process as “an inquiry into the histories, cultural and natural, of places that reveal the land as both a field of human endeavour and an agent of historical processes.”

The lecture is presented in conjunction with the Scotiabank Photography Award: Mark Ruwedel exhibition, on view at The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) from April 29 to June 28, 2015. Arrive early to ensure seating!
