Volker Seding (Berlin, 1943 – Toronto, 2007), studied drawing, painting, photography and cinematography in Hannover, Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1966. While working as a cinematographer after arrival, he developed the roots of an artistic direction in photography and in 1976 began working solely as an artist.

American Artifacts is published by Black Dog Publishing and produced in association with The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre). Bergerson will be signing books at 7pm, followed by a lecture at 7:30pm. The lecture is FREE and open to the public. Please arrive early for guaranteed seating. The related exhibition, Phil Bergerson: Emblems and Remnants of the American Dream, is on view at The Image Centre until April 13, 2014.

Jo Spence was a London-based feminist, activist artist whose career in photography began in the mid 1960s. Working first for already established commercial photographers, Spence eventually opened her own studio specializing in weddings, portraiture, and actors’ portfolios. She is best known, however, for her radical, collaborative documentary work begun in the mid-1970s, forcing her to abandon her commercial work to take up explorations of issues surrounding health, class, self-image, and the family album.

The lecture is presented by The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre) and the School of Image Arts. Admission is FREE. No registration required. Please arrive early to ensure seating.

The RIC is also pleased to offer a pre-lecture exhibition preview of Scotiabank Photography Award: Stan Douglas from 3pm to 7pm. The exhibition opens officially on May 1 and runs until June 1, 2014.

As a visual activist for the rights of LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) people in South Africa and beyond, Muholi endeavours to radically change the conventional perception of lesbian and transgender communities, who suffer from an epidemic of continuous attacks: “corrective” and “curative” rapes, physical and psychological assaults, and hate crimes.

Prior to the lecture, the gallery will be open beginning at 4pm that day for a preview of all summer exhibitions.

Toronto collectors Harry and Ann Malcolmson, have been collecting photographic works since the mid 1980s. Their collecting practices are driven by their travels and a desire to develop a collection representing the history of photography. Their holdings include nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century works by various artists including, among others, Eugène Atget, Tina Modotti, László Moholy-Nagy, Max Dean, Robert Frank and Man Ray, many of which make up their recent donation and corresponding exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and past exhibitions at the University of Toronto Art Centre (2012) and the Presentation House Gallery (2009).

Palu's work has been featured in the BBC, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, The Atlantic, The Globe and Mail, The Economist, and Wall Street Journal, to name a few. He is currently at work editing a book and a feature documentary film from his multi-year study of the war in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Kate is a doctoral student in the University of Toronto's Department of Art and a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University's (formerly Ryerson University) Image Arts Master's program in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management. She is also assistant curator of DISPATCH: War Photographs in Print, 1854 – 2008.

Labour in a Single Shot deals with ‘labour’: paid and unpaid, material and immaterial, rich in tradition or altogether new, within a particular cultural context. Through a series of workshops in 15 cities around the world, the project sought to produce videos of 1 to 2 minutes in length, framed only in a single shot. This event is made possible with support from the Goethe-Institut, Toronto.

Born in St. Catherines, Ontario in 1955, Edward Burtynsky is one of the world’s best known and most respected photographers. His images of little known industrial and manufacturing sites, landscapes altered by habitation, and waste products from consumption reveal the world we live in as a post-industrial sublime, at once beautiful and terrifying, in vivid colors and at startling scale.
