New to the collection: Two influential mock-ups from the golden age of the illustrated magazine
Jul. 16, 2019
The Ryerson Image Centre is pleased to announce the donation of two magazine dummies from the estate of Robert Lebeck, a celebrated German photojournalist associated with the Black Star photo agency. These two important mock-ups of collaged photographic images and placeholder text were created by German émigré and Black Star co-founder Kurt Safranski just after he moved to New York City in 1934. They were shown to press editors and inspired American publisher Henry Luce to launch the renowned illustrated magazine LIFE in 1936. Joining the RIC’s extensive Black Star Collection of photojournalism and our complete and unbound set of LIFE, these dummies will be invaluable resources for scholarly research.
