Julia Hendrickson: As She, Rehearses Disappearance
July 20 – August 21, 2016
Student Gallery, The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre)
Fragmented images of a female dancer are projected onto a gallery wall, drawing attention to the instability of photographs, performance, and human memory. As the dancer turns, a string coils around her body and leaves ephemeral imprints on her skin. Through cinematic capture and repetition, the brief performance is pulled into a medium that extends its life. The materials comprising the installation are a physical extension of the dance, embodying the dancer’s performativity: tension arises from the taut string; movement is expressed through the body and the flickering film; and sound emanates from a piano recording and the clicking of 16mm projectors. Everything comes together in a constant act of circularity. The installation presents a performance in various stages of withdrawal, as both the subject and the documentation of her performance will inevitably disappear.
