Ailene deVries: a stone holds my shadow

January 22 - February 22, 2025
Student Gallery

Ailene deVries’ a stone holds my shadow explores the weight and transformation of grief through photography and weaving. Beginning in a Toronto graveyard, deVries used a twin-lens camera to interact with her shadow, creating a dance of light and form that reflected her attempts to grapple with loss. Over time, she moved from "capturing" grief to weaving it, transforming graveyard images into tactile patterns on the loom. This process of layering and eroding images mirrors the sedimentary weight of grief—a force that breaks down yet rebuilds, grounding her exploration in both movement and materiality.
